Die Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU)<\/strong>, mit einem Stiftungskapital von rund 2,9 Milliarden Euro eine der gr\u00f6\u00dften Umweltstiftungen Europas, setzt ihre Reihe \u201eDBUgoesBrussels<\/em>\u201c am Mittwoch, 19. M\u00e4rz 2025, ab 18:30 Uhr in der Vertretung des Landes Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg bei der Europ\u00e4ischen Union (EU) mit einer Veranstaltung zum weltumspannenden Thema Kunststoff und dessen weitreichenden globalen Auswirkungen auf Mensch, Tier, Umwelt und Ressourcen fort.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kunststoff \u2013 auf Deutsch umgangssprachlich auch Plastik genannt \u2013 ist aus unserem Alltag nicht wegzudenken: Von Shampoo bis Schallplatte, von Duschgel bis Deo, von Kleidung und Kosmetika bis hin zu Kunstfaser, Komposte und Kl\u00e4rschlamm und nicht zu vergessen der gesamte Elektro- und Mobilit\u00e4tssektor: Wir leben in einem Plastik-Zeitalter. Fachleute sprechen gar vom \u201eplastifizierten Planeten\u201c. Kunststoff ist leicht, vielf\u00e4ltig, praktisch und teils unverzichtbar \u2013 etwa in der Medizin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Kehrseite: Selbst in der Antarktis und hoch auf dem Himalaya finden sich Kunststoffpartikel und mehr als 150 Millionen Tonnen Plastikm\u00fcll in unseren Meeren. Jedes Jahr kommen laut EU 4,8 bis 12,7 Millionen Tonnen Plastik hinzu. Nicht nur Meere und M\u00e4gen von Fischen und V\u00f6geln sind betroffen, sondern auch der Mensch. Plastik, insbesondere Mikro- und Nanoplastik, landet in Herz und Hirn, Leber, Lunge, Blut. Auf nationaler und EU-Ebene gibt es zum besseren Schutz von Mensch, Tier und Umwelt Gesetze zur Gen\u00fcge. Zu einem entscheidenden L\u00f6sungsfaktor k\u00f6nnte die Circular Economy<\/em>, also eine umfassende Kreislaufwirtschaft, werden \u2013 angefangen bereits beim Produktdesign \u00fcber M\u00fcllvermeidung, Wiederverwenden und Wiederverwerten bis hin zum Teilen, Recyceln und Reparieren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welche Wege gibt es also aus der Plastikflut, ohne auf lebenswichtige Komponenten zu verzichten? Dieser Frage will die Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) in einer Veranstaltung ihrer Reihe DBUgoesBrussels<\/em> auf den Grund gehen \u2013 mit hochkar\u00e4tig besetztem Programm und Panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Kooperation mit der baden-w\u00fcrttembergischen Ministerin f\u00fcr Umwelt, Klima und Energiewirtschaft, Thekla Walker<\/strong>, l\u00e4dt die DBU zu einer Abendveranstaltung ein, die sich diesem Umweltthema widmet: \u201ePlanet unter Druck: Wege aus der Plastikflut<\/em>\u201c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dabei soll es zum einen um eine Bestandsaufnahme gehen: \u00dcber welche Kunststoffmengen reden wir \u2013 in Deutschland, Europa und weltweit? Wie wird Kunststoff hergestellt, wie entsorgt? Wie viel Abfall entsteht Jahr f\u00fcr Jahr national, auf EU-Ebene und in der Welt? Welche Staaten und Regionen z\u00e4hlen zu den gr\u00f6\u00dften Kunststoffproduzenten?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zum anderen will das diesj\u00e4hrige Fr\u00fchjahrs-DBUgoesBrussels<\/em> ganz im Sinne der DBU-F\u00f6rderstrategie m\u00f6gliche L\u00f6sungswege aufzeigen. Die damit verbundenen Aspekte: In welchen Bereichen sind Plastikprodukte unverzichtbar, wom\u00f6glich sogar lebenswichtig? Wo aber w\u00e4ren alternative \u2013 und nachhaltige \u2013 Ersatzprodukte m\u00f6glich? Auf welchen Feldern bietet zum Beispiel die Circular Economy<\/em> vielversprechende Auswege aus der Plastikflut? Einige Fachleute bezweifeln, dass die Plastik- und insbesondere die Mikro- sowie Nanoplastikkrise \u00fcber Recycling gel\u00f6st werden k\u00f6nnte \u2013 und st\u00fctzen sich dabei auf einen Bericht des World Economic Forum: Danach werden weltweit lediglich etwa neun Prozent des gesamten jemals produzierten Plastiks tats\u00e4chlich recycelt. Wie also k\u00f6nnte der Anteil des Recycling erh\u00f6ht werden? Oder bietet sich gar eine effektivere Variante zur Reduzierung des Plastikm\u00fclls an?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All diese Fragen sollen mit hochkar\u00e4tig besetztem Programm und Panel unter die Lupe genommen werden. Mit dabei sind Vertreterinnen und Vertreter von EU-Kommission, EU-Parlament, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Politik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als Keynote-Speakerin (per Videobotschaft) wird die Generaldirektorin GD Umwelt, Dr. Florika Fink-Hooijer<\/strong>, die schon bestehenden Ma\u00dfnahmen der EU aber auch die Strategien der Zukunft im Umgang mit Kunststoff erl\u00e4utern. Zur Sprache kommen d\u00fcrften dabei unter anderem die EU-Kunststoffstrategie oder das Kreislaufwirtschaftspaket. Neben Fink-Hooijer werden die baden-w\u00fcrttembergische Umweltministerin Thekla Walker<\/strong> sowie DBU-Generalsekret\u00e4r Alexander Bonde<\/strong> Ein- und Ausblicke zum Thema liefern. Im Anschluss an Keynote und Impulsvortr\u00e4ge folgt die Podiumsdiskussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU, Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt<\/em>)<\/strong>, one of the largest environmental foundations in Europe with a foundation capital of around 2.9 billion euros, is continuing its DBUgoesBrussels<\/em> series on Wednesday, 19 March 2025, from 6:30 p.m. at the Representation of the State of Baden-Wurttemberg to the European Union (EU) with an event on the global topic of plastic and its far-reaching global impact on humans, animals, the environment and resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is impossible to imagine our everyday lives without plastic: from shampoo to vinyl records, from shower gel to deodorant, from clothing and cosmetics to synthetic fibres, compost and sewage sludge, not to mention the entire electrical and mobility sector: we are living in a plastic age. Experts even speak of a \u2018plasticised planet\u2019. Plastic is light, versatile, practical and sometimes indispensable – in medicine, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The downside: plastic particles can even be found in the Antarctic and high up in the Himalayas and more than 150 million tonnes of plastic waste in our oceans. According to the EU, 4.8 to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic are added every year. Not only the oceans and stomachs of fish and birds are affected, but also humans. Plastic, especially microplastic and nanoplastic, ends up in the heart and brain, liver, lungs and blood. There is plenty of legislation at national and EU level to better protect humans, animals and the environment. The circular economy could become a decisive solution factor – starting with product design, waste avoidance, reuse and recycling through to sharing, recycling and repairing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what are the ways out of the plastic flood without sacrificing vital components? The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU, Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt<\/em>) wants to get to the bottom of this question at an event in its DBUgoesBrussels<\/em> series – with a top-class programme and panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In cooperation with Baden-Wurttemberg’s Minister for the Environment, Climate and Energy, Thekla Walker<\/strong>, the DBU is organising an evening event dedicated to this hugely important environmental issue: \u2018Planet under Pressure: Ways out of the Plastic Flood\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the one hand, the aim is to take stock: What quantities of plastic are we talking about – in Germany, Europe and worldwide? How is plastic produced and how is it disposed of? How much waste is produced every year at national, EU and global level? Which states and regions are the biggest producers of plastics? On the other hand, this year’s spring DBUgoesBrussels<\/em> aims to highlight possible solutions in line with the DBU funding strategy. The associated aspects: In which areas are plastic products indispensable, possibly even vital? But where would alternative – and sustainable – replacement products be feasible? In which areas, for example, does the circular economy offer promising ways out of the plastic flood? Some experts doubt that the plastic crisis, and in particular the micro and nanoplastic crisis, can be solved through recycling – and base this on a report by the World Economic Forum: According to this, only around nine per cent of all the plastic ever produced worldwide is actually recycled. The question therefore arises as to how the proportion of recycling could be increased? Or is there even a more effective way of reducing plastic waste?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of these questions will be examined with a high-calibre programme and panel. Representatives from the EU Commission, EU Parliament, business, science and politics will be taking part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As keynote speaker (via video message), the Director General of DG Environment, Dr Florika Fink-Hooijer<\/strong>, will explain the EU’s existing measures as well as future strategies for dealing with plastics. Among other things, the EU plastics strategy and the circular economy package are likely to be discussed. In addition to Fink-Hooijer, Baden-Wurttemberg’s Environment Minister Thekla Walker<\/strong> and DBU Secretary General Alexander Bonde<\/strong> will provide insights and outlooks on the topic. The keynote and welcome speeches will be followed by a panel discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
