This PhD sets out to investigate the technological feasibility of a portable hydrogen-producing fuel cell based on reforming technology using bio-ethanol as the fuel. The goal is to develop a CO2-neutral, quiet and highly efficient system for off-grid power generation of a few 100 W.Current fuel cells source hydrogen from either metal hydrides or compressed gas. Due to low energy densities, a compressed gas storage is inferior to a system with a reformer and liquid fuel tank. Liquid fuel’s benefits include its high energy density, ease of transport, and worldwide commercial availability. Although portable fuel cells with less than 1 kW electrical power are anticipated to reach commercialization first, little effort has been made to develop portable fuel cells based on reforming technology. This project sets out to fulfil this unmet opportunity. The process by which bio-ethanol will be converted to electricity and heat is as follows. Firstly, catalytic reform of the ethanol will create a hydrogen-rich gas. Secondly, a water-gas-shift-reaction will turn the resulting carbon-monoxide into carbon-dioxide and water. In the final steps, CO will be removed further or the hydrogen separated. The clean reformate gas is fed into a polymer-electrolyte fuel cell where, upon combustion with oxygen from an air feed, electricity and heat are generated. Total system efficiency clearly exceeds that of conventional diesel- or gasoline-fuelled electricity generators. The lifespan is significantly longer than for batteries, which are traditional competitors to small power fuel cells. The system is also user-friendly, the refilling of the tank being the only requirement to reuse the system.Possible micro-fuel cell system applications based on bio-ethanol range from portable applications, e.g., electricity generators to decentralized (off-grid) power supply and also stationary applications, such as industrial combined heat and power generation.

Entwicklung, Untersuchung u.
