Regulation of rodent populations is usually done by chemical rodenticides, which can pose a risk to non-target species. Alternatives to the use of rodenticides may also collide with nature conservation interests such as shortened vegetation at field margins or deep ploughing. Common voles disperse from refuges (e.g. field margins) to arable land, but it is largely unknown how the dispersal processes are controlled in this source-sink dynamic. If management takes place before dispersal of voles to crops, it would be spatially and temporally restricted to small areas (refuges, field margins), so that massive infestation and resulting plant damage could be reduced. Therefore, this work investigated which factors influence the population development in refuges and dispersal onto fields. These data may serve as a basis for the development of suitable methods for common vole management on arable land. These management methods should also be useful and economically feasible for farmers and should promote sustainable and environmentally friendly population management of common voles. The existing variety of non-chemical management approaches for rodents in agriculture have been identified in a literature review.Â

Analysis of genetic relationships revealed a high exchange between the common voles across field, which was not visible via capture-mark-release alone. Furthermore, the results indicate that preventing dispersal has smoothing effects on population growth rate and survival. This could add further management benefits to the likely limitation on vole immigration from source habitat to impact habitat by downregulated multi-annual maximum population size in fenced refuges in the long term. In addition, fencing may stabilize population size, which may be beneficial for terrestrial and avian predators. The potential to dampen maximum population densities and the associated dispersal pressure indicates that vole management could profit from barriers between refuge habitats and arable fields. In general, a better understanding of the population dynamics of common voles in response to management methods would require a long-term data collection that systematically identifies efficiency, effectivity and environmental sustainability. Barrier fences similar to those used in the present study could offer an additional approach.
