It’s important to protect these objects from further decay or to reverse damage. Porous materials are particularly affected, as pollutants can penetrate deeply into the stone. Treatment options are constantly being developed and tested, but often at the expense of the object itself through destructive measures and lengthy preliminary tests. Additionally, the range of available treatment solutions needs to be expanded.

The first part of her doctoral thesis has demonstrated that it’s possible to predict the infiltration behavior of different restoration-relevant material/liquid systems based on a transparent micro-model (testing system). Reproducible predictions have also been made for mineral systems based on these results. Furthermore, an alternative restoration solution with liquid mineral precursors has been characterized and tested for its suitability for infiltration.

In the second part, the transferability of these predictions to actual stone samples is being investigated. Several alternative restoration materials for porous carbonate stones are being compared to commercially available products. Natural stone samples are extensively characterized using typical restoration, chemical, and mineralogical methods to enable comparison before and after treatment. If the results match the predictions from the micro-models, it would be possible to shorten the time frame from object characterization to compatible treatment, as well as to approach the development of new restoration materials in a more targeted manner.

The thesis will conclude with a study on the use of liquid mineral precursors in a durable and easily dosable powder form as a binder for loose grains (filler). Test specimens will be produced by mixing the new binder, filler, and carbonate powder in different proportions and tested for their mechanical, chemical, and mineralogical properties. The resulting materials are expected to have great potential as macroscopic repair materials for carbonatic cultural objects, as well as potential building material or large-scale soil stabilizer.

Â

Erhalt carbonat-basierter Naturmaterialien durch besseres Verständnis von Kristallisation in Poren DEUTSCH/GERMAN: Andra-Lisa Hoyts Forschung konzentriert sich auf den Schnittpunkt von Chemie und Steinkonservierung, insbesondere auf: • Infiltrationsverhalten von restaurierungsrelevanten Material-/Fluidsystemen • Poröse Materialien • Mineralogische und chemische Analyse • Mechanische Eigenschaften • Mikroskopische Modellierung • Flüssige mineralische Vorstufen • Carbonathaltige Kulturobjekte • Bindemittel und Füllstoffe […]

[2477
post-52395","promotionsstipendium","type-promotionsstipendium","status-publish","hentry","tag-deutschland
["GET
