Subitec GmbH aims at developing an integrated process for the production of an eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) - rich oil produced from phototrophic algae. EPA is traditionally obtained in the human diet by eating oily fish, e.g. cod, herring, mackerel, salmon or sardine. However, fish do not naturally produce EPA, but obtain it from the algae they consume. By making direct use of the algae, a cheap and pure vegetarian source of omega-3 is opened up, which can be used as a dietary supplement or as an ingredient of functional foods for a healthy human diet. The algae-oil is characterized by a high proportion (over 30%) of essential omega-3 fatty acid EPA.

Besides increasing availability of EPA the new process leads to various environmental improvements:

• Photoautotrophic production of microalgae
• Integrated recycling and energy recovery of the whole biomass
• Avoidance of toxic pollution (PCBs, dioxins, heavy metals) of the product
• Reduction of organic solvents in the processing
• Preservation of the conventional resource fish
