From 2009, DBU accepts also individual applications from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia.
The programme offers young scientists from the respective countries a broadening experience of their professional horizons in the ecological domain within a research stay from six to twelve months in Germany.
First contacts and the application for a scholarship are made in the respective home countries. DBU partner organisations have their seat there and inform about the programme at universities and are available for applications and inquiries. Once a year a best-of-selection is held, the research stay in Germany starts approximately six months after the selection interviews.
DBU welcomes a wide range of fields in the ecologies and supports particularly a stay in facilities where an advanced practice proximity is given. Some scholarship holders from Central and Eastern Europe use their research stay in Germany to continue their dissertation. DBU also welcomes partnerships between German and foreign university facilities.
Host institutions for foreign scholarship holders are universities, companies from the environmental sector, from consulting and management as also ministries and associations.

DBU provides annually approximately 60 research stays for young scientists from all aforementioned countries at German facilities. Beside the financial support, there is also an insurance covering health, accident and personal liability.
