Fritz Brickwedde studied history, political sciences and media studies at the Westfaelische Wilhelms University of Muenster, and worked as lecturer and head of the faculty at the academy of the diocese of Muenster, the Franz Hitze Haus.
He was leader of the adult education centre Georgsmarienhuette and head of the department for school and culture, landscape and regional planning for the administrative district Emsland.
There, he was also responsible for the co-ordination of environmental tasks. Before he started his work as Secretary General of the DBU on 1 March 1991, he was speaker of the Lower Saxony government and leader of the press and information office under minister-president Dr. Ernst Albrecht.
On 23 October 2002 the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus, faculty for ecologic sciences and process technology, awarded Mr Brickwedde the honorary doctorate, "Dr. Ing. e.h." for his "performances in the scientifically founded protection of environment, nature and culture".
Fritz Brickwedde is known for a wide-spread honorary commitment. Since 16 May 2002 he has been chairman of the Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen.
