Scholarship Programme with Central and Eastern European Countries

Application Procedure:


1. What documents must I submit? Where should I submit the documents?
Following documents in German or English must be submitted online to the application deadline (http://www.dbu.de/963.html):

  • Resume
  • Copy of high school diplomas (Bachelor and Master / Magister). If there is not a diploma, certificate, a study submitted with the previous academic work and the date of graduation. The certificate must be present one month before the scholarship starts.
  • Project Description
  • Comments from a university professor from the home country
  • Possibly a proof of language skills

3. Are there any local contacts?

4. How should the project description be structured?

  • Introduction (What central question should be examined why the topic is important and what are the problems?)
  • Scientific knowledge (What is already known on this topic? Are there any studies on this topic? Where is the current knowledge gap?)
  • What is the project goal? (What I would like to learn? Are there any ideas on how the objective can be achieved?)
  • methods (which methods / tests (laboratory experiments, literature reviews, surveys, etc.) should be performed?)
  • The project description should include 2-3 pages (font Times New Roman, font size 12, line spacing 1.5)

5. Do I meet the application requirements?
The basic formal requirements for submission are:

  • High school graduates from the participating countries
  • A national of a participating country
  • Permanent address in home country
  • Above average (good to very good) university degree (Master, Master, Master; Bachelor's degree is not sufficient)
    The study may not be longer than three years previously
  • Relevant environmental issue (for the home country, the EU or global)
  • Knowledge of German language, the latest at the beginning of the scholarship must be demonstrated (application and interview in German or English)
  • A firm partner or concrete placement is not a funding requirement

6. Do I already have a steady partner in Germany?
A solid project partners in Germany is not a funding requirement. You can, however, like to inform in advance that university, which institution or company, etc., would come into question for you. 7. Can I apply without German language skills?
German language skills are not necessary at the time of application.

8. At what level must be the English-language skills?

9. Is there a list of exemplary projects?

10. As the courses are funded by the DBU in your home country?

11. What happens if you fail the test of the German language by the coordinator is?

12. How hard is it to get a scholarship?

13. Can I apply with a bachelor's degree?

The recommendation of the academic supervisor should be in German or English. A translation by the applicant is not allowed.

18. How can the language skills be verified?
The language skills can be a language certificate or certificate of proof. It ranges but also the assessment of a language teacher.

19. What happens if the application documents are incomplete?
Incomplete applications result in rejection.

20. When you get a feedback on whether the application was successful?
The invitation to the interview given at least 4-6 weeks after the application deadline. The final decision a day after the interview.

21. If the application has been refused, can I apply again next year?
In principle, a new application is excluded. But there are few cases where the DBU will request applicants explicitly to submit an application again. But these are isolated cases.


Selection interviews:

1. How long takes an interview?
The interview lasts 30 minutes. The candidate has 10 minutes to present the project idea, then there are some questions from the jury.

2. Who participates in the selection interview?
The talks take a panel of German and local environmental experts, a representative of the German Federal Environmental Foundation, the national coordinator and former fellows.

3. What language is the conversation?
The interviews are in German or English.

4. How should the presentation be structured?
The presentation should include a brief introduction to the topic, highlight the environmental problems and identify possible methods of representing solutions.

5. When will I know the result?
The decision of the selection committee can choose the day after the talks with the country coordinators are requested by phone.


Before going abroad :

1. If the costs of introduction seminar taken by the DBU?
The accommodation and meals during the introductory seminar will be completely taken over by the DBU.

2. Should we pay the travel costs to Osnabrück or the placement itself?
The travel costs to Germany (Osnabrück) must pay the fellows themselves. The journey from Osnabrück to the placements will be organized and paid for by the DBU.

3. When you get the scholarship for the first month?
The scholarship for the first month you get to the introductory seminar in cash.

4. The scholarship is paid in cash or per bank transfer?
The scholarship is always transferred to the middle of the month on a German bank account.

5. Should we open a German bank account?
Yes, the account opening is essential.

6. What to watch out when opening a bank account?

7. Should we pay for the scholarships in Germany or in the home country tax?

13. How can you travel for less money in Germany?

14. Should we report to the DBU, if you go on vacation home?

15. Does DBU support the participation in scientific conferences?
In exceptional cases. Each student receives a monthly travel allowance should be paid from the first conference participation.

16. Are there DBU events where it is mandatory to participate?

17. As decided by the DBU, whether support can be extended?
